Dug under the highest massif in Western Europe, the Mont-Blanc tunnel connects Chamonix (F) to Courmayeur (I). Contrary to what its name indicates, it is under the Aiguille du Midi (and not Mont-Blanc). It connects on the E25 between the A40 in France and the A5 in Italy. This avoids a detour of several tens of kilometers and the crossing of passes. It has also become an almost obligatory crossing point for many heavy goods vehicles and holidaymakers between the Arve Valley and the Aosta Valley. This road tunnel is known to have been the longest in the world from its construction in 1978, surpassed by the Arlberg tunnel in Austria. He also had a terrible accident on March 24, 1999. Two other important tunnels allow you to cross the High Alps to reach the north-west of Italy: the Fréjus tunnel (opened in 1980 and longer than that of Arlberg) 200 km by road to the south and, from Switzerland 75 km to the east, the Grand-Saint-Bernard tunnel.
